Rondo – Breakout Session

rondo football training session

Rondo Session Info:

Rondo – Breakout

An excellent Rondo that can work with many different session topic depending on your preferred outcome.

  • Set up 9, 10m x 10m squares. Total area size should be: 30m x 30m. This area can be adjusted bigger/smaller.
  • If possible, use 4 flat cones for the main, centre square.

How to play:

  • 2 teams, 4 blues & 6 reds.
  • 4 blues vs 2 reds stay in the central square with blues in possession.
  • When reds win the ball back, they can BREAK OUT of the central square and look to exploit space. Bringing their 4 teams mates in from the outside: turning it from a 4 vs 2, to a 4 vs 6 – using the WHOLE 30m x 30m area.
  • The 4 blues will try and win the ball back. Upon gaining possession, the game restart as a 4 vs 2 in the middle square.
  • Any 2 reds will move to the middle square, with the other 4, returning to the outside area.
  • Swap the 4 bibbed players every few minutes.
  • Adjust the size of the square once the players are comfortable.
  • Blues: After 3 passes, they can move their team unit to a connecting square. Expand this to any square.
  • Blues: Can restart in any square after regaining possession.
  • Reds: Force minimal touch passes within the central ROW.

This rondo is very, very adaptable depending on your own session objectives

  • Exploiting Space

Players should be ready to exploit the space in other areas. How can they do this?

  • Entice

Enticing your opponent plays a vital role in exploiting space behind them.

  • Movement

Players should be light footed, on their toes, with an open body shape.

  • Decisions

Decision making is an important skill to have in football. This will be high pressure.

  • Anticipate

Don't REACT, anticipate. Where will the opposition go? Where will your teammates go?

  • Positivity

Mistakes will be made. Focus on every aspect of the good stuff.
